Weekend in Review

Do you ever watch Toy Story? I feel like I have seen all three of them a million times. It has to be the #1 movie to watch in our household. In fact, Megan’s 3rd birthday had a Toy Story theme and four months later Tyler’s 2nd birthday had the same. Different cakes, same theme.

Sometimes I think about all the toys that are sitting around our house and it absolutely drives me crazy. I have purged a great deal of toys over the last month, but we still have tons of them. The problem is, my kids DO play with all of their toys. Like, all the time. So, I really can’t purge any more.

Well, that was a ramble if I ever wrote one.

My weekend started out with this…

And then, this…

She is fine now, just some lung issues that we needed to attend to.

By Saturday morning, Megan was ready to attend the first of two weekend birthday parties. The first was for a boy in her pre-school class who I really don’t know. Being a working mom, I have only done one drop off and pick up this year, so my interaction with the children in her class is very limited. I thought she would want me to stay, but when we arrived at the party she looked at me and said, “Mommy you can go now.” And, there it was. My baby has grown up, right before my eyes. How did this happen?

I wish I could say I did something fun while she was there, but I had some work to do for my class. Off to Barnes and Nobel I went with some intimate time with EDRE 672. I have to be honest, it was nice to have the time. My mom was with Tyler (Shawn worked the night before), Megan was at the party so my mind was free of worry. Oh, and I did get to stop by Old Navy, next door, and check out the clearance section. I possibly might have purchased a couple of things at 50% off.

I wish I had taken a picture of how darling Megan looked at the party. My mom bought her a new dress from H&M and it is a winner. I am sure she will wear the same dress a million times this spring. She was cute. And, the mom sent me an e-mail about how polite and sweet Megan was. Melt my heart.

Other than that we did a lot of just hanging out. The weather has been absolutely gross here, so there is not much to do except hang. Also, both kids are not feeling great and I am starting to feel a cold coming on, so it is best to stay in.

Picture proof…Tyler is feeling horrible today.

We might be in for even more horrible weather tomorrow. UUUUGGGGHHHH!

How is your week starting out?

Weekend Update…Operation Dodge Cabin Fever

Well, it continues to be the weekend here in Loveland, OH. Yes, you guessed it…another SNOW DAY! I have mixed feelings about it because there is so much to do at school, but I am thrilled to spend another day with my little munchkins. Megan woke up in the middle of the night with a horrible cough and awkward breathing (we almost got dressed to go the ER) so it was nice to have a bit of time to sleep in this morning too. Don’t worry, Miss M is fine this morning. I think she just has a head cold.

Thisweekend was a mix of a lot of lounging and a a lot of moving. Friday night we hung out as a family of four and ordered take-out from Outback. Our favorite. On Saturday I let Shawn sleep in and we headed to the gym. Megan loves Kid Fit class so we made it just in time for her to participate. I was able to get three and a half miles in the the treadmill.

When we got home Megan spent the rest of the day with a couple of the neighborhood girls. We are blessed to live in an awesome neighborhood full of little kids. It is not uncommon in the summer to have fifteen kids ages two to eight in our back park. I love the kids and I adore their moms. We are all different but have similar values which makes it a great community.

After a day of playing the girls, of course, scammed me into hosting a sleepover. It was impromptu and so much fun. I made cupcakes and let the girls (and Tyler) decorate them. They had a blast.

Then it was play play play the rest of the night. At 10:30 I forced them into bed and they giggled for an hour. So sweet. By midnight they were done.

In the morning we had time for quick manicures before the ladies went home and we got dressed and headed to church.

Later that day we headed to the “big gym” and the kids played while we worked out. When we were leaving we realized the rock wall was open. After signing my life away the kids gave it a try.

Needlesstosay, they loved it. We all be back…especially because it is free! Gotta love free activities at the good old YMCA.
Also, the kids were exhausted when we got home and promptly went to bed at 6:00 and did not make a peep all night. Shawn was working so I felt like I was on vacation…I watched HGTV without interruption, ate a bowl of ice cream, and enjoyed the calm.

Yesterday we were back at the gym in the morning and I was able to participate in Muscle Max which I love. I have not been able to get to a class since the summer so it felt good to be back. Boy, am I sore this morning.
In the afternoon we did another fun free activity.

Swimming for the win!

Today we are going to relax. I probably will not go anywhere since Megan is a little under the weather.

What activities does your family do to cure cabin fever?

Back to Work…No Thank You

Today should have been my first day back from Christmas break. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. With sub zero conditions and icy roads, school was called off last night. I will take it as a win…but I was kind of ready to get back to it today.

I think I have talked on here before about suffering from anxiety. It is very controlled and I know my triggers, so I have been able to keep it under the radar for a long time. One of my triggers is not having a routine. I do not do well with idol time. While I am working my scheduled does not leave much room for downtime, but when I am on a break schedules go out the window.

For the past two weeks we have done very little. We did take the kids to Sky Zone and we have been out to eat a couple of times and have had many many play dates, but we haven’t done any “normal” activities. I have been too sick and had too much coughing to even think about the gym, all of our extra-curricular a have been on a break, and we barely eat breakfast before 10. It has been a lot of fun, just not normal.

I must say, I have done really well with little scheduling these weeks. In fact, this has been my best break ever with the kids. We have soaked up a ton of family time and I have loved playing Batman, Doc McStuffins, Sofia, Toy Story, and lots of “restaurant” (a favorite pretend game in our house). It’s been awesome having Shawn home on break too. We all just kind of gelled and it was a wonderful bonding time for us.

Today I was looking forward to getting back to my classroom. I have a lot going on work-wise for the next few weeks and I am ready to jump on it. My lessons are planned and I have a lot of cool projects in store for my students.

But, it will have to wait until tomorrow (or, quite possibly, Wednesday). And that is okay. I would never complain about a snow day!

As for my resolution for 2014…I guess it will have to wait for tomorrow!

When Sickness Fills the Home

I believe I have watched approximately 75 episodes of Pretty Little Liars over the course of this 2 week break. I am completely addicted to that show and all that it is about. I cannot figure out any of the plot twists until they happen, I am invested in all of the characters and I love their clothes, shoes and nails to name a few things. I am obsessed. well done, ABC Family, well done.

I never understood where people found the time to watch so much TV, but now I do. Come down with strep throat, sinus infection, and double ear infections all while being pregnant and it will knock you down so hard that you will not be able to do anything else. I have literally been sitting in a chair or laying in my bed for the past five days. I am finally starting to feel better today and I use the term “better” very loosely…meaning, I can swallow without pain and the coughing has slightly subsided. Oh, the coughing. I thought it would be the end of me. Not only because it brought on waves of wicked nausea but it also brought back ye old weak bladder, if you know what I mean. TMI. I get it.

Christmas was wonderful. Our kids are spoiled. So are we. The highlight was having both sides of the family at our house for Christmas Day. I have never hosted such an elaborate feast, but I loved every minute of it. We have spent a lot of time holed up in our house for several reasons…first and foremost because it has been so freakishly cold and snowy here. We also had flooding in our basement which lead to a lot of work (on the hubby’s part) and Tyler has had the stomach flu.

Life. You just have to roll with it.

Otherwise, things are pretty status quo over here. We are soaking up our last few days of freedom before commitments take over. I will be back hopefully tomorrow with my first official pregnancy update. I never did those with Megan or Tyler so I think it will be fun to start a new tradition for this little bit.

Hope you all are feeling happy and healthy in the start of 2014!

I’ve Become A Cliche

I read a lot of “Mommy Blogs.” I love reading about how people are raising their children across the country. I don’t buy into mommy wars or anything like that. We all do things differently and that is great; we can learn a lot from each other. But, one thing remains the same with pretty much every blogger I have eve read…when she becomes pregnant the blog falls apart for a while.

About a week after I wrote this post about how happy I am to be a mom of two, this happened…

To say we were surprised and shocked would be an absolute understatement. Because I had suffered an early miscarriage exactly the same time last year I was very cautious and scared and I took about a million tests. And then,we saw the most beautiful image at my doctor’s appointment.

20131221-095621.jpgWell, hello, baby #3…we already love you.

It has been 13 weeks of non-stop nausea but so much happiness. I am so thrilled with the idea of one more precious little one. And so are these two…

20131221-100111.jpg We told our families at Thanksgiving dinner with those awesome shirts!

I apologize for my sporadic posts at best. Now you know why. I am a cliche! More to come in the next few weeks. Today I am enjoying my first day of Christmas break. We are celebrating in pajamas with cereal while watching Christmas cartoons. Bliss, I tell you, pure bliss!

Back to Reality

Holy sleep, Batman!
Tyler slept for a whopping 14 hours last night. Poor little guy, the Holiday must have really taken it out of him.
He woke up this morning smiling and happy, so I guess it was necessary.

Thanksgiving weekend was an awesome display of just the right amount of doing and resting. I decided this year to avoid any Black Friday madness, opting instead to hang and play with the kiddos. It was glorious. We went outside and played (freak act of nature and it was 55 degrees yesterday), watched several Christmas movies (The Elf of the Shelf and Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer were tops!), and just enjoyed being together. Shawn decorated the house for Christmas while we were gone on Wednesday, so he relieved a lot of stress there.

My girlfriends met for dinner on Wednesday night and it was lovely. I just find being in their company to be so wonderful. I wish we could do it more. Some of my girls and I have been friends for 33 years! That is amazing to me. Many have been with me for 20. I love that…wherever life takes us we are always together (at least in spirit!).

Chippy the Elf made his appearance this weekend. I will hopefully remember to take pictures and post pictures of his antics. I love this tradition and the kids do too! So far he has been stuck in our Christmas wreath and in a hot tub of marshmallows with Rapunzel Barbie (the Chippy is a little frisky!).

Coming back to work after the extended weekend was not so bad after all. I have a lot planned for my students in this short time between Thanksgiving and Christmas break. Eek…already looking forward to that LONG two weeks off!!!!!

I am sitting in a quiet house. The kids are playing in the basement and Shawn is still sleeping. I have so many things to be thankful for.

My family is such a blessing to me. I was given the best gifts of Megan and Tyler. I am not just thankful for them during this time of the year but everyday.

My husband is a family man and a hard worker. He puts our family ahead of everyone else. I love that he is thoughtful and unexpected.

I am thankful for blessings my friends have enough untested o Er the past few weeks and thankful that I am surrounded by so many wonderful people in my life.

I hope to blog a lot more in December…no promises, though.

Have a great end to a hopefully beautiful long, thankful weekend.

Catching Up

I have been a real blog slacker…like, whoa.

I have said before that sometimes it gets hard for me to think of things to write, and I guess that is the case now.

Changes have been happening in our little family.

Shawn took a new position in his company and his schedule, albeit different, seems like a better fit for all of us.  He is now home more days during the week and working every other weekend. It makes him happy because he is able to participate more in the kids’ lives and we are able to see each other more.  I must admit, so far so good on my end too.

Tyler is growing up.  We took down his crib last weekend and replaced it with an awesome baseball bed that Shawn and his dad made.  It is truly a piece of art and Tyler is thrilled…if we could only get him to sleep in it, that would be amazing.

Megan and Tyler fell off the side of a cart at Hobby Lobby last weekend.  They are fine.  Just noting, this is the second time this has happened in the past month (they don’t learn their lessons!).  Now, Megan says her arm is “broken” and needs constant attention.  Shawn made her a fake cast and she thinks it is the best thing that has ever happened to her.  I must admit, when I was a little one I loved having band-aides and fake casts myself.

Speaking of Megan, she has been learning nursery rhymes in pre-school.  This week she memorized “Hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle the cow jumped over the moon” and it performing it for the whole class.  Holy adorable.

Is there anyone else super excited about Thanksgiving????  It might be my favorite holiday.  I love how much sitting/laying around is involved.  I also love that my girlfriends meet the Wednesday before for dinner.  It has been a tradition for at least the last nine years, maybe more.  It is such a great way to start the holiday.  This year our full group will be there…from near and far.  I couldn’t be more happy.  We all need this.

My father in law had to have a heart procedure done this morning.  His heart has been in afib for quite a while and he was not responding to medication.  So, this morning he had his heart shocked back into rhythm.  Thank God everything went according to textbook and he is doing great.  I don’t talk about him much but I just love Big John.

Finally, I feel like I am in a bit of a slump.  Since the time change I have been so exhausted.  There is just a lot going on in my life personally and professionally that is making sleep difficult and getting up even more of a challenge.  I am hoping the start of the “holiday season” will better my mood and put me in a more positive place.

You Can’t Please Everyone

You can’t please everyone…

I have been thinking about that statement a lot lately. My whole life I have felt like I was pulled in many different directions. Mostly it has been self-imposed because I am a “yes” person, but more recently I have let the reactions of other people rule my mood; and I don’t like it.

This weekend someone said something very nasty about me behind my back, to my mom. Specifically, it was about my weight and how every time she sees me my clothes look tighter and tighter.
And when it was repeated to me I was very hurt by the comment. In fact, I almost cried about it.

Then I thought to myself, who is this person to judge me? In fact, I have lost 20 pounds since August. And I am working out daily. And I am feeling good. Am I really going to let someone control my emotions and how I feel about myself?
And, so I got over it.

My mom may never get over it.

I also have a problem with letting people’s reactions get the best of me. I try my best to include everyone and to make people feel welcome and appreciated. I don’t live in the same city as many of my family and friends do, so when I have something going on not everyone can come. I am no longer going to feel bad about that. I am going to live the life that I am craving for me and for my family. I cannot control how other people feel about me.

In better news…
I have been purging my house room by room. It has been awesome. Shawn added to the fun this weekend by cleaning out his clothes in the closet. I am proud of him…that is not something he likes to do, but he did it and I know he felt good about it when he was finished. I have two small projects left (guest room closet and Megan’s closet) and then it is on to the garage and the basement which might take all winter, but I am going to do it. By spring I want to move on to our first large project since moving into our home. We are going to re-decorate the living room which includes new flooring, new paint, new wiring, new furniture and possibly a built in. WOW writing that down makes it seem like a huge undertaking. Young House Love I am not J

Anyways, I feel better getting all of that off my chest. I am looking forward to a fabulous week. After all, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Today I married my best friend.
Nine years ago today I was standing in the back of St. Brendan’s church peeking through the blinds as my favorite people flooded into the church. I always wanted to get married in a packed church full of the people I loved the most. I wanted to walk through those double doors, with my dad holding on to me for support, and watch the sea of people smiling and crying tears of joy for me, for us. I wanted to navigate through those people and end up in the front with the man I loved; the one God intended for me.

We might not have the perfect marriage by the book, but in my eyes we have a perfect marriage for us. When he walks into the room I still feel butterflies deep in my belly. He has made my dreams come true. I don’t often express how much I love Shawn, but I do…very much.
